Dev, DM
Due to issues with the current Affinity System, and after discussing various other possible candidates from this thread, we may be temporarily switching to a different one. Why temporarily? When we do the rewrites for the spells, hopefully arriving in January, we're going to be placing the supposed Affinity Bonuses & Losses directly into the spells themselves (or whatever the heck we call them by then), rather than as a passive in the rules. However, until then, I'd like to have an Affinity System that, for at least the time being, satisfies... enough.
Below is a list of three choices. I'm not listing an option for "Other" because that was already discussed in this thread.
Vote for the one you like most, or if you don't care, then you don't have to vote. In one week (October 19th by 8:45pm CST), this poll will automatically be closed. Whichever has the most votes by then is the Affinity System we'll use until the spell rewrites.
EDIT: Due to tutorial/quest scheduling shenanigans, we're shifting the poll close date to Thursday, October 15th by 8:45pm CST.
Below is a list of three choices. I'm not listing an option for "Other" because that was already discussed in this thread.
1 - Current System
If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack has no relation to the target’s Affinity, there is no Bonus or Loss.
If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack is strong against the target's Affinity, you get an Affinity Bonus for your attack.Light (Level: 5) is strong against Shadow (Level: 1)
5 + 1 = +6 Successes
Nature (Level: 6) vs. Arcane (Level: 3)
0 Successes
No relation there!
- Add your Affinity Level as the base.
- Then add the target’s Affinity Level that you’re strong against.
- Formula:
- Your Affinity + Target’s Affinity = Total Bonus
- Water (Level: 2) is strong against Fire (Level: 3)
- 2 + 3 = +5 Successes
On the other hand, If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack is weak against the target's Affinity, you get an Affinity Loss for your attack.Water (Level: 9) is weak against Nature (Level: 3)
(9 + 3) * -1 = -12 Successes
Shadow (Level: 2) is weak against Shadow (Level: 11)
(2 + 11) * -1 = -13 Successes
Arcane (Level: 100) vs. Fire (Level: 1)
0 Successes
No relation there!
- Subtract your Affinity Level as the base.
- Then subtract the target’s Affinity Level that you’re weak against.
- Formula:
- (Your Affinity + Target’s Affinity) * -1 = Total Loss
- Nature (Level: 2) is weak against Fire (Level: 4)
- (2 + 4) * -1 = -6 Successes
In the case you attack someone with an Affinity that is affected by two Affinities of the opponent, here’s the process:Water (Level: 2) vs. Fire (Level: 6) and Nature (Level: 10)
2 + 6 - 10 = -2 Successes
Shadow (Level: 10) vs. Light (Level: 10) and Shadow (Level: 2)
10 + 10 - 2 = +18 Successes
Nature (Level: 4) vs. Fire (Level: 6) and Arcane (Level: 3)
(4 + 6) * -1 = -10 Successes
Fire (Level: 7) vs. Light (Level: 1) and Shadow (Level: 5)
0 Successes
No relation? No Bonus. No Loss.
- Add your Affinity Level as the base.
- Then add the target’s Affinity Level that you’re strong against.
- Then subtract the target’s Affinity Level that you’re weak against.
- Formula:
- Your Affinity + Strong Against - Weak Against = Total
- Light (Level: 5) vs. Light (Level: 3) and Shadow (Level: 1)
- 5 - 3 + 1 = +3 Successes
When you use an Affinity attack that hits multiple targets, all of the bonuses and losses are distributed after the roll is made.
- If you attacked using Shadow Storm with Shadow (Level: 4), and it hit some targets with Light (Level: 3), Shadow (Level: 2), and Light (Level: 1), it would be as thus:
- Shadow (Level: 4) attack resulted in 32 Successes.
- Shadow (Level: 4) is strong against Light (Level: 3) = 32 + (4 + 3) = 39 Successes
- Shadow (Level: 4) is weak against Shadow (Level: 2) = 32 - (4 + 2) = 26 Successes
- Shadow (Level: 4) is strong against Light (Level: 1) = 32 + (4 + 1) = 37 Successes
2 - Baseline System
If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack has no relation to the target’s Affinity, there is no Bonus or Loss.
If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack is strong against the target's Affinity, you get an Affinity Bonus for your attack.Affinity Bonus:
Then add the target’s Affinity Level that you’re strong against.
Formula:
Baseline + Bonus = Total
Examples:Light (Level: 5) is strong against Shadow (Level: 1)
5 + 1 = +6 Successes
Nature (Level: 6) vs. Arcane (Level: 3)
0 Successes
No relation there!
- Affinity Baseline:
- Add your Affinity Level as the base.
- Water (Level: 2) is strong against Fire (Level: 3)
- 2 + 3 = +5 Successes
On the other hand, If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack is weak against the target's Affinity, you get an Affinity Loss for your attack.Affinity Loss:
Then subtract twice the target’s Affinity that you’re weak against.
Formula:
Baseline - (Loss * 2) = Total
Examples:Water (Level: 9) is weak against Nature (Level: 3)
9 - (3 * 2) = +3 Successes
Shadow (Level: 2) is weak against Shadow (Level: 11)
2 - (11 * 2) = -20 Successes
Arcane (Level: 100) vs. Fire (Level: 1)
0 Successes
No relation there!
- Affinity Baseline:
- Add your Affinity Level as the base.
- Nature (Level: 2) is weak against Fire (Level: 4)
- 2 - (4 * 2) = -6 Successes
In the case you attack someone with an Affinity that is affected by two Affinities of the opponent, here’s the process:Affinity Bonus:
Then add the target’s Affinity Level that you’re strong against.
Affinity Loss:
Then subtract twice the target’s Affinity that you’re weak against.
Formula:
Baseline + Bonus - (Loss * 2) = Total
Here’s some examples:Water (Level: 2) vs. Fire (Level: 6) and Nature (Level: 10)
2 + 6 - (10 * 2) = -12 Successes
Shadow (Level: 10) vs. Light (Level: 10) and Shadow (Level: 2)
10 + 10 - (2 * 2) = +16 Successes
Nature (Level: 4) vs. Fire (Level: 6) and Arcane (Level: 3)
4 - (6 * 2) = -8 Successes
Fire (Level: 7) vs. Light (Level: 1) and Shadow (Level: 5)
0 Successes
No relation? No Bonus. No Loss.
- Affinity Baseline:
- Add your Affinity Level as the base.
- Light (Level: 5) vs. Light (Level: 3) and Shadow (Level: 1)
- 5 + 1 - (3 * 2) = +0 Successes
When you use an Affinity attack that hits multiple targets, all of the bonuses and losses are distributed after the roll is made.
- If you attacked using Shadow Storm with Shadow (Level: 4), and it hit some targets with Light (Level: 3), Shadow (Level: 2), and Light (Level: 1), it would be as thus:
- Shadow (Level: 4) attack resulted in 32 Successes.
- Shadow (Level: 4) is strong against Light (Level: 3) = 32 + 4 + 3 = 39 Successes
- Shadow (Level: 4) is weak against Shadow (Level: 2) = 32 + 4 - 4 = 32 Successes
- Shadow (Level: 4) is strong against Light (Level: 1) = 32 + 4 + 1 = 37 Successes
3 - Old Version Before Hiatus with x2 Multiplier
If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack has no relation to the target’s Affinity, there is no Bonus or Loss.
If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack is strong against the target's Affinity, you get an Affinity Bonus for your attack.Light (Level: 5) is strong against Shadow (Level: 1)
5 * 2 = +10 Successes
Nature (Level: 6) vs. Arcane (Level: 3)
0 Successes
No relation there!
- Affinity Bonus:
- Add your Affinity Level * 2.
- Water (Level: 2) is strong against Fire (Level: 3)
- 2 * 2 = +4 Successes
On the other hand, If you use an Affinity-based Attack on a target, and the Affinity of the attack is weak against the target's Affinity, you get an Affinity Loss for your attack.Water (Level: 9) is weak against Nature (Level: 3)
-(3 * 2) = -6 Successes
Shadow (Level: 2) is weak against Shadow (Level: 11)
-(11 * 2) = -22 Successes
Arcane (Level: 100) vs. Fire (Level: 1)
0 Successes
No relation there!
- Affinity Loss:
- Subtract target's Affinity Level * 2.
- Nature (Level: 2) is weak against Fire (Level: 4)
- -(4 * 2) = -8 Successes
In the case you attack someone with an Affinity that is affected by two Affinities of the opponent, you just apply both an Affinity Bonus and an Affinity Loss:Alternatively:
(Your Affinity - Target's Affinity you're weak against) * 2 = Total
Here’s some examples:Water (Level: 2) vs. Fire (Level: 6) and Nature (Level: 10)
(2 - 10) * 2 = -16 Successes
Shadow (Level: 10) vs. Light (Level: 10) and Shadow (Level: 2)
(10 - 2) * 2 = +16 Successes
Nature (Level: 4) vs. Fire (Level: 6) and Arcane (Level: 3)
-(4 * 2) = -8 Successes
Fire (Level: 7) vs. Light (Level: 1) and Shadow (Level: 5)
0 Successes
No relation? No Bonus. No Loss.
- Formula:
- Bonus - Loss = Total
- Light (Level: 5) vs. Light (Level: 3) and Shadow (Level: 1)
- (5 - 3) * 2 = +4 Successes
When you use an Affinity attack that hits multiple targets, all of the bonuses and losses are distributed after the roll is made.
- If you attacked using Shadow Storm with Shadow (Level: 4), and it hit some targets with Light (Level: 3), Shadow (Level: 2), and Light (Level: 1), it would be as thus:
- Shadow (Level: 4) attack resulted in 32 Successes.
- Shadow (Level: 4) is strong against Light (Level: 3) = 32 + (4 * 2) = 40 Successes
- Shadow (Level: 4) is weak against Shadow (Level: 2) = 32 - (2 * 2) = 28 Successes
- Shadow (Level: 4) is strong against Light (Level: 1) = 32 + (4 * 2) = 40 Successes
