Serving as the protectors of death itself are Fairies, a race of magically created beings ruled by a deity known as the Great Fairy. They’re used throughout the land to sacrifice themselves for the sake of saving someone’s life, which can be seen as both heroic and barbaric. Oddly enough, Fairies actually want to sacrifice themselves for the greater good, so despite the apparent immorality of storing them in captivity for the sake of reviving their captors, it’s actually sanctioned.
Or at least, it was, until Agahnim attacked. Several years after the fall of Ganondorf, a mysterious mage known as Agahnim attacked Death Mountain with a large army of dragons, including Aquamenti & Gleeoks. While the attack distracted the Gorons and everyone else, Agahnim infiltrated the Fairy Fountain atop Death Mountain and used his powers to corrupt it. The Great Fairy was sealed, and the corruption spread to every Fairy Fountain in the land, and not just in Hyrule, but every fountain on Loftis.
Since then, Fairies have been an endangered species. Oddly enough, adventuring parties seem to have at least one on each party member, despite their apparent rarity. How they’re scattered throughout dungeons and treasure chests will forever be a mystery, though there is a way to save them. Each corrupted fountain has an evil guardian protecting it, along with some incredibly weird gimmicks. If one enters a corrupted fountain and defeats the evil guardian, the fountain will be purified, causing some of the Fairies to return. In theory, should all of the Fairy Fountains be purified, the Great Fairy will be unsealed and be capable of creating more Fairies.
So far, the following fountains have been purified:
Unfortunately, it’s unknown how many fountains there are total, as the Great Fairy has been slowly expanding her domain over the years, creating more fountains throughout all of Loftis.
A note, Fountain Fairies are not to be confused with Forest Fairies.
