Reverse Cover:
EFFECT: Hide behind an ally, causing them to use Cover on you.
Is it possible for multiple people to Cover each other? How would that even work? Now let's look at the Cover Loop:
A Cover Loop is used to choose who's defending an attack. The idea is you take the Cover Train and have the last person in the train use Cover on the guy at the start of the train. So how does this actually work?
Say I attempt to attack Person C right there. Oh wait, Person B is blocking, but then to attack him, Person A, is blocking, but to get through him, Person C is blocking, and so on and so forth.
Instead of everyone in the loop infinitely delegating the attack to the next person, rather than me choosing who I attack in a Cover Loop, everyone in the Cover Loop gets to choose who I attack.
This can be done with any number of people.
Regarding attacks that hit multiple targets, only the person in the front will be hit.
As nice and invincible as either of these tactics look, keep in mind it requires some set-up and won't always be possible.
Outwit:
Roll your Courage +3 dice vs. targets' Wisdom dice
Damage: None
EFFECT: If your successes are higher than the average successes of your enemies, you (specifically) escape from the current battle.
Say an enemy successfully Escapes from the battle, and it's the last enemy in the battle. Since the battle then ends, can I immediately pursue?Just an FYI, this rule is completely reversable, so if you're the last person in your party and you successfully Escape, you'll be able to get away without further resistance...
Unless you Escape into an unexplored room and there's a enemy right there. In which case, you're super screwed, cause the enemies behind you will sandwich you. Hint, don't Escape to somewhere you haven't been yet. It's just a bad idea.
IF FAIL: Target becomes aware of you and automatically gets the chance to use Escape or initiate official combat (everyone rolls initiatives).
IF FAIL: Target becomes aware of you and automatically gets the chance to use Escape or initiate official combat (everyone rolls initiatives).
When using an attack that hits multiple targets when using either Sneak-Up or Stealth Strike, do you roll the sneak attack against all targets or just one? It's done this way to prevent a ridiculous amount of dice differentials and calculations.
Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ answers questions regarding the Rules & Knowledge of ZURPG. You can find the Quest FAQ here.
Dual Wielding
Can you dual wield swords? If both Swords provide a passive bonus of +2 Courage, then you gain both their effects while they're equipped. A sword's specific attack (Roll your Courage +5 dice vs. targets' Courage dice, aka the Dice Modifier) does not affect the other sword's attack.
- Yes. You can dual wield any two Weapons that don't have the Two-Handed REQUIREMENT. You can even dual wield Shields. Just keep in mind that unless you have the proper Skills, you can only Attack with one of them at a time.
- Dual wielding Shields means that when you defend, you actually do get the passive benefits from both Shields.
Friendly Fire
Can you attack your own ally?
- Yes. So long as the item or ability in question is not limited in what you can target, you can target anyone. There's an ability called Throw, which lets you pick up one target and throw it at another target. The target which you pick up can even be your ally.
Multiple Hit Attacks
How is the damage for Multiple Hit attacks calculated?
- Unless otherwise stated, the damage the Attack causes per Hit is calculated separately for each Hit on the target and then the damage for each Hit is added together at the end to produce the total damage caused in the Attack on the target.
Optional Counterattacking
When you get the ability to counterattack someone, is it required?
- You are not forced to counterattack. That said, if you somehow end up getting the ability to counterattack an ally or even yourself (lol), you are not forced to and can opt not to. If enemies are in the situation of attacking their allies or themselves, they are defaulted to not doing so.
Partial Rolling
Can I roll an amount less than my actual dice roll?
- Yes. You can even choose not to roll at all.
- UNLESS you have lost control of yourself, though there are extremely few abilities that are capable of doing so.
Rounding
What happens in the case of a result ending in .5?
- .5 or higher will round up. Anything less than .5 will round down. Tis standard rounding rules.
- FYI, rounding should only be done at the end of a result. If you have a total multiplier of 2.25, apply that first, then round at the end.
- In most cases, rounding cases will deal with .5.
Stat-based
When something is Power-based or Courage-based, is it referring to the attacking stat or the defending stat?
- The attacking stat. A Power-based attack means that even if the target rolls Power, Courage, or Wisdom, the attacker is still rolling Power.
Weapons Stolen
What happens if my Weapons get stolen and I have no backups?
- Then you resort to your Basic Skills. Good luck getting your Weapons back!
They're Covering Each Other
Cover
- REQUIREMENTS: Being able to move
- DESCRIPTION: Use your body as a shield! Select a target to use Cover on or Reverse Cover.
- Cover:
- EFFECT: Anyone targeting the selected target will instead hit you.
- If you are unsuccessful in defending any attack, Cover wears off.
- DURATION: Cover lasts until you're hit or until you use Cover on someone else.
Is it possible for multiple people to Cover each other? How would that even work?
- Yes, and I'm referring to this as the Cover Loop. But first, let's take a look at the Cover Train:
- A Cover Train is used to protect one person in particular from harm by sticking multiple people in front of him. Before anyone can attack Person B, they must get through Person A first, and before anyone can attack Person C, they must get through Person A and Person B.
- This can be done with any number of people.
Pursuing an Escapee
Escape
- REQUIREMENTS: Being able to move
- DESCRIPTION: Run away! Run as far as you can! 'Hits' all enemies by using either Outrun or Outwit.
- Outrun:
- Roll your Courage +3 dice vs. targets' Courage dice
- Damage: None
- EFFECT: If your successes are higher than the average successes of your enemies, you (specifically) escape from the current battle.
Say an enemy successfully Escapes from the battle, and it's the last enemy in the battle. Since the battle then ends, can I immediately pursue?
- If by pursue and catch up via a Courage vs. Courage roll, no, because that roll was part of Escape. Simply following them to wherever they Escaped to, on the other hand, is entirely doable. For example, say an enemy Escapes the battle by heading through the door to the north. You can choose to follow and also go through the north door.
- This doesn't guarantee you catch up to the enemy though.
Sneak Attacking with a Multi-Target Attack
- RESTRICTIONS: Target cannot know you are there. Otherwise, this will automatically result in IF FAIL.
- DESCRIPTION: Try to speedily sneak up on a target in an attempt to cause a pre-emptive strike!
- Roll your Courage dice vs. targets' Wisdom dice
- Damage: None
- IF SUCCESS: You're able to immediately follow-up with any attack or action on the target.
- If it's an attack, it gains Dice equal to the difference in successes from the Sneak-Up. It will also initiate official combat (everyone rolls initiatives).
- RESTRICTIONS: Target cannot know you are there. Otherwise, this will automatically result in IF FAIL.
- DESCRIPTION: Try to stealth up on a target in an attempt to cause a pre-emptive strike!
- Roll your Wisdom dice vs. targets' Wisdom dice
- Damage: None
- IF SUCCESS: You're able to immediately follow-up with any attack or action on the target.
- If it's an attack, it gains Dice equal to the difference in successes from the Stealth Strike. It will also initiate official combat (everyone rolls initiatives).
When using an attack that hits multiple targets when using either Sneak-Up or Stealth Strike, do you roll the sneak attack against all targets or just one?
- Just one. How it works is you roll to sneak against the initial target.
- If it fails, all enemies notice you and get the chance to stay and fight or automatically escape.
- If it succeeds, you get the Dice Bonus against just the initial target, and then your normal attack roll against all other targets.
