Theorize: "Choose how you defend" - WindStrike - 10-12-2015

One of the issues I have with ZURPG is that you can't choose how you defend. Well, you can to a limited extent, and that's by choosing your stat line-up and customizing your loadout, or maybe having one of those rare abilities that triggers when you defend. Anyhow, I'd ideally like it so that you can choose with stat you defend with, rather than going "This attack rolls my Power stat vs. your Power stat", which implies "I'm gonna use my strength to beat you down, and for some reason, even if you have a really high Courage/speed stat to dodge it, I'm forcing you to defend with your own strength". So why isn't ZURPG using that system now?

Well... it used to in an older version of the game, and it was borked because all you had to do was jack all of your Stat Points into one stat. Not only do you one-shot things, but no one can hit you. We also experimented with sticking limits on stats, but it was still borked in the early-game, or maybe restricting how many times you can defend with one stat in a round... which didn't make sense, and going one-stat auto-won 1v1's.

As a result, I've kinda deemed that for ZURPG, trying to adopt this kind of system is impossible. But... I'm curious to know what you guys think. If we were to adopt a "Choose how you defend" system, how do you think we could implement it? Just theorize some stuff, I guess. However, even if someone puts down an answer in this thread that is genuinely good and "holy crap, we should totally switch ZURPG to that right now!", we probably won't unless we suddenly get five more hungry developers that desperately wanna see that system come to light in ZURPG. It's mainly just theorycrafting, something fun to think about for the future; not necessarily for this game, but perhaps another game.
