What's this 2.0 you keep speaking of? - WindStrike - 05-07-2014

So I've mentioned this ZURPG 2.0 a few times, and some of you are probably wondering what that's all about. It's the next iteration of this game, or rather, this game system. Its setting will be a custom built crossover between Ocarina of Time's map and Twilight Princess' map, and the overarching plot will be the Hyrulean Civil War, which is a war between some of the major races for the Triforce, ala Hylians, Gorons, Zoras, Gerudo, and several others. It takes place approximately 10 years before the start of Ocarina of Time, so it's roughly around the time Link is born. By the end of the war, the Dark Interlopers have been defeated, and the Hylian King has united all of the other races under one banner of peace.

... but that's only what history theoretically says. In reality, based on player actions, that could all easily change. Heck, the players could try going for the Triforce themselves. Essentially, the plot will go exactly as history says if players commit towards a common goal of peace, but somehow, I highly doubt that's going to happen, especially given the shady nature of some of our players currently. Where the plot will really go, who knows.

In terms of the game's new features (a good number of which will be implemented to some degree in the current game), the primary aim is to give even more freedom to the players:
  • Craft your own items
    • Expect a beta form of this to show up sometime for the current game next year.
    • This will also come with a compedium of some sort.
  • Changing how the game is balanced
    • Level tiering and level restrictions will be removed
    • Instead of the game emphasizing stats influenced by items, it aims for an even mix of both. That said, items and abilities will be considerably stronger, and it won't be a game of primarily stat countering.
  • Reduced level scale
    • Instead, you'll start at Level 5, and you'll be able to cap out at Level 20.
    • However, the depth of each level is improved greatly. When you level up, you gain stat points equal to your new level. That said, the total stat points at the end is 210 as opposed to the current 250. It's a bit lower, but the increased power of the items will make up for it tremendously.
    • For Experience, you'll still gain Experience equal to whatever you kill/defeat, but the amount of Experience you'll need to level up is equal to your current level squared. Wheras the total amount of Experience to get to Level 50 for the current game is 6,125, the total amount to get from Level 5 to Level 20 for 2.0 is 2,440.
    • In theory, this means it's 2.5 times faster. However, it's also a lot harder.
  • Learning spells and skills
    • You'll still be able to buy and acquire Scrolls that teach you Spells and Skills. However, the majority of them will only be acquirable by learning... and through a Feats system, which is in line with the Achievement system.
  • Yes, Achievements
    • Just like how in most games nowadays where you can get achievements for various actions, be it something small or something nearly impossible, they'll also be in 2.0. No idea what the achievements are yet, but it'll be an expansive list that'll be available for everyone to see from the start.
    • These achievements, some of which are Feats, give various rewards, be it Experience, Rupees, or (especially from the Feats) Skills and/or Spells.
  • Legend moves
    • This is the ability to create a signature move on the spot. Say you want to try and fire a Fireball at your feet and block the explosion with your shield. The explosion sends you upwards with your shield aflame, and you smite someone as you land on him with your flaming shield. Those that witness such an incredible improvised move will surely tell tales of it... and that move will be something you're able to do again at any time. Additionally, as stories of it grow and more people fear it, it will actually grow in power.
    • I'm aware this sounds like something that can be abused horribly, so... I'll be working on this system such that it's not as abusable as it sounds.

That there is a decent starting list for new features. Does it sound crazy? Heck yes it does, and that's exactly what I'm aiming for. That said, feel free to suggest various futures you think would be cool for the next iteration of ZURPG.
