What is ZURPG? - WindStrike - 09-23-2011

ZURPG stands for Zelda Universe Role-Playing Game. It is an online role-playing game based on the Zelda Universe and includes a turn-based combat system. The only requirement to play the game is that you're able to access the IRC channel, which is #zurpgchat at the LunarNet server irc.lunarnet.org. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, you can check out WindStrike's quick tutorial for HexChat.

In this game, all rules of the game, shops, quest info and character profiles are here at the site. Players utilize their own character to interact with other players, go on quests (set up by the DMs), fight other creatures and players, and find secrets hidden in quests. Although all characters start out mostly identical, how you build your character from there is highly customizable, and by the end of the first quest or so, everyone generally has completely different setups. With nearly 500 Skills, Spells, & Artifacts in the game, plus a ton of unique enemies that have their own specialized skills, it's very unlikely you'll run into someone with an identical build.

The battle system is reliant on an IRC Bot that uses dice to determine outcomes. You'll have three primary stats used for attack and defence (Power, Courage, Wisdom), a health stat (Hearts), and a Magic stat. As you level up, you'll be able to increase these stats.

Locations of the quests will be set throughout Ocarina of Time's Hyrule and Majora's Mask's Termina. Eventually, we might expand further, but even between those two, there's a lot to discover.

In a nutshell, ZURPG combines roleplaying, the lore of the Zelda Universe along with its own original lore, a JRPG-style battle system, and DMs to set up quests and stories. DMs & Players usually convene once a week for a session, which generally lasts 2 to 3 hours. There are also shenanigans. Lots of them.
